Language study is a cornerstone of the Global Affairs major because effective perspective-taking demands that we learn to listen, notice, and communicate across cultures. By developing proficiency in a language other than English, students gain insight into how people in different regions perceive the world, live their values, and negotiate solutions to shared challenges. Language learning not only equips students with practical skills for diplomacy, business, and advocacy, but also deepens their appreciation of cultural nuance and diversity.
GLBE students receive instruction in 1 of the 10 global languages currently offered at Rice. The Department of Modern and Classical Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (MCLLC) offers courses in German, French, Hebrew, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. The Department of Transnational Asian Studies leads instruction in Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.
Students without prior language training register for the introductory-level course in their chosen language. All others will take a Language Placement Test during the summer break or winter recess. We work closely with the Center for Languages and Intercultural Communication and the MCLLC’s Director of Language Instruction to place students in the appropriate courses no later than the start of their sophomore year.
GLBE students who believe they are already proficient in a language other than English must consult with the Global Affairs major advisor as soon as possible.
